Refuge de Solaise, Val d’Isère, France

Everyone knows that a skiing holiday isn’t cheap but if you have some money left then book a few nights at the beautiful hotel Refuge de Solaise in Val d’Isère, France. This hotel is only accessible by gondola or on skis which creates a charming feeling. Since this year the hotel has been fully open, and the luxury radiates from it. New and luxurious but with a nostalgic winter sports feeling of dark woolen rugs, bathtubs on legs with great views over snowy peaks. There are four apartments (one has its own fitness room), thirty-four lovely rooms, a dormitory for mountain climbers (a great budget option), a bar with delicious restaurant and a spa with a swimming pool of twenty-three meters long. Book the show-off apartment with the whole family (including dogs and kids are very welcome although it’s a challenge to get them all in the gondola) with eight bedrooms and high windows with stunning view. lerefuge-valdisere.com

Riders Hotel, Laax, Switzerland

If you think that skiing in Switzerland is nothing more than rösti, cuckoo clocks and blushing royals than you have clearly never been to Laax. This small village is according to experts a hotspot for freestyle skiing, snowboarding and top athletes. If that sounds to alternative for you then take a look at the new Riders Hotel. After a nice makeover the hotel has been reopened with 63 rooms and a fresh, practical and attractive look. The rooms are compact but cool with rain showers, black metalwork and plywood beds next to light bulbs and concrete floors. And very important, all rooms have high windows overlooking the frozen lake from which the CO2-neutral hotel derives its warmth. You don’t have to go far to apres ski because there are often live performances in the bar on the ground floor. The Alcea Beanie is the perfect beanie to wear after skiing. There is also a club in de basement which can accommodate around 700 people! Don’t be afraid, in the room you hear nothing of it. In the evening the restaurant serves mostly a vegetarian menu (think brown bean burgers with jalapeño mayonnaise and sweet potato fries). Next-door there’s a Freestyle Academy with skate ramps, trampolines and dry slopes. Ideal for perfecting your rodeo-flips before you walk to the Crap Sogn Gion cable car in five minutes. From there you have access to the varied terrain, 70 percentage is more than 6500 feet which means that the seasons are long, and the snow is trustworthy. ridershotel.com

Valsana Apartment & Hotel, Switzerland

We will stay in Switzerland for a while because we love everything what has to do with cheese, chocolate and white mountain peaks. If you’ve ever been to Arosa then you know it’s all about skiing. A crowd puller here is the Tschuggen Grand Hotel which has its own ski lift and fantastic spa. A unique place but the Alps have been begging for more affordable hotels for years. And that’s where the news comes in, from the same owners as the Tschuggen. No white tablecloths or rooms where Heidi would feel at home. But 40 rooms where reindeer motifs and antlers be exchanged for Aztec patterns, botanical prints and industrial seats. Restaurant Twist serves a healthy menu with vegetarian dishes and a vegan coconut chocolate mousse. The hammocks on the balconies are also very nice. The Valsana hotel is the first ecological hotel with ice battery which means that no oil or gas is used. In addition, the mattresses are made from coconut fibers. The nearest cable car is just a few minutes away and thanks to the linking of the ski resorts Arosa Lenzerheide there is 140 miles of slopes. You can also walk there or play ice golf. Our Basic Skimitts are great for these kind of snow activities. Back in the hotel you can follow yoga classes, there are weekly movie nights and there is a little spa with treatment rooms named after swiss ski champions. valsana.ch
